Tore Honoré Bøe - acoustic laptops

The "acoustic laptops" are wood boxes with various tiny objects attached; springs, stones, metal, rubber, string, needles, memorabilia - amplified by contact mikes (piezos).

They are musical instruments with which you can explore a soundworld that usually pass unnoticed and thus connect with unfiltered reality in a pleasurable way.

They appeared as a practical solution to how Boe´s previous chaotic table-top instrumentation could be easily recreated (and transported) for practice and continuity. So they are instruments, commenting on the current digital reality, social communication tools and (if desired); ritualised objects.

Boe use them for microacoustic sound exploration and performances, but he also share them via exhibitions where they stand plugged for the visitors to play, or in workshops where young and old are invited to create their own. Various acoustic laptops are on permanent and temporary display at galleries, other musicians are using them, and Boe travels continously to present them in any way and venue possible.

Whereas Boe uses them to produce the microsounds he desires in his electro-acoustic music, a growing number of other musicians have started using them as additional effect gizmos. Boe has performed lots of concerts with them, mostly on his own, but due to their versatility also in free improv collaborations with colleagues.

Boe also gives workshops where people are invited to create their own "personal pc's". These events are always entertaining, for young or old, for the previously informed or the absolute amateur. Thus the acoustic laptops as functional flux-boxes are starring in both informal social settings and the established world of art.

In these times of digital options and general gadget worship, the acoustic laptops demonstrate the complexity of simplicity, the reframing and recycling of objects, the contemporary urge to reconnect to hands-on creation and the ethos of the do-it-yourself culture.

The acoustic laptops are not an anti-digital statement, they are a neutral addition that form a great platform for altering the perception of possibilities.

Tore Honoré Bøe har de siste ti årene produsert et stort antall av sine «Akustiske laptopper». Dette er små trebokser dekorert med trivielle småting som lager lyd (binders, hårspenner, nåler etc.). Materialet i esken virker som en resonator, og lyden forsterkes ved bruk av en eller flere kontaktmikrofoner.

Publikum inviteres til å spille på dem ved å pirke, gni, dunke og dra i de forskjellige små objektene som er i eskene. Bøe spiller også konserter med laptoppene, og ved hjelp av hans stadig pågående workshops og inviterende holdning, er konseptet spredt til mange ulike felt. Alt fra barnehagebarn til støymusikere har bygget sine egne akustiske laptopper med Bøes velsignelse.

Det er et levende konsept som stadig utvikler seg, til dels utenfor Bøes kontroll. Eskene kan sees på som «found object-collager», kjent fra dada- og Fluxus-tradisjonen, men like viktige referanser er David Tudors «Tudor boxes» og Michel Waisvisz' «Kraakdoos» (Cracklebox) som videreføres i dagens «circuit bending» og annen gjør-det-selv instrumentkunst.

Sammenhengen mellom lyd og visualitet får en særlig egenverdi, med collage og «found objects» som en felles referanse. Både i musikk og i billedkunst har bruken av slike funne objekter en lang tradisjon og kan således fungere som et bakteppe ved lesning av Bøes arbeider.

Eskenes gjør-det-selv-estetikk gjør terskelen for interaksjon lav, og selv om noen av tingene på eskene skulle falle av og limes fast igjen er det ikke ødeleggende for opplevelsen eller for laptoppens videre liv. De akustiske laptoppene skaper et direkte og taktilt møte med publikum og åpner nye sosiale rom når de stilles ut.

Spontane performancer og samspill hos publikum oppstår plutselig, og en oppfordres til ikke-verbal kommunikasjon. Lydene er fascinerende, ikke bare i seg selv, men også som et audio-mikroskop. Kjente objekter gis helt ny betydning, i kraft av sine iboende lyder som vi vanligvis ikke kan høre. En rekke hårspenner blir en kalimba, en lang tynn fjær blir til torden, en nål blir en bass, og så videre.
