TORE HONORÉ BØE - SERUM (10" by Komkol Autoprod)
Last week when I opened my mailbox there was something hard and shiny in
there. When I finally had the nerve to take it out it appeared to be this
grey 10" record without a sleeve. On one side there is a label with
Norwegian stamps and my name and adress and a green 'B economique' sticker,
covering the hole. On the other side it indicates the name and title. Now
this is a very nice surprise of course. At the same time the means of
transportation indicate the subtitle of the record: postal system scratch
dj version. It seems that Mr. Bøe has taken the meaning of the word scratch
very literally. Indeed the record is severly scratched by its unprotected
journey here. Obviously this is part of the concept, so I put it on without
hesitation. After playing it twice I decided on the 33rpm version. It is
difficult to hear through the crackling vinyl at first, also because the
music starts fairly late. And when it starts its volume is very low. This
play between composed sound and random damaging is certainly interesting,
although I feel that the music is actually too subtle at times. The same
can be said for the other side. I wouldn't mind hearing the music without
the scratches, because it is defenitely good enough. Then again, I wouldn't
have had such a nice surprise in my mailbox. Last but not least I have to
make a note here: the resemblance with Christian Marclay's Record Without A
Cover of 1985 is of course very obvious. But somehow I don't really mind.
(MR), 265 TORE HONORÈ BE - SISTA' EP (7" by Mold)
TORE HONORÈ BE - MELATONIN (Mini-CD by Mold)
KA - 00 (7" by Mold)
T. H. Be has made one of my favourite Cd's ever: Siesta. He is now back with
these two recordings. The 7" is a short edit of recordings made in New York,
live and in the field and later edited. Environmental sounds mix with
electronics, silence mixes with noise and everything is very dynamic. I have to
admit that this was somewhat of a surprise after Siesta. Then again, Mr Be is
a very versatile person and proves so instantly on side B, which is only very
faint in the beginning and later goes full blast.
Melatonin is an edit of various live recordings in Norway and the USA and
starts quite subtle with some background sounds, sometimes distorted by
seemingly malfunctioning electronics. Field recordings are added to the
spectrum, but everything is still very silent. And then track one is over,
sadly. Track two also starts very silent with distant sounds and a soft rumble
and later a few tiny beeps and again it's over already, and again sadly. Track
three continues with the beeps getting a little louder and shuffling sounds are
added. Then a rumble fades in and with that crackling noises and a feedback
here and there. And again this track simply stops too soon I feel. So far my
absolute favourite disc.
KA is one of Be's bands, and this 7" contains live recordings as well. And
once more the volume is quite low in the beginning, later getting louder.
Sounds of footsteps and other movements are on top of a layer of deep,
stuttering bass. When volume increases, the layers interfere and create some
distortion. Field recordings are also used. The other side starts with a loop
made of bells or metal, to which live metal is added. Things get a little
rougher here and there, but in general it has the sam quiet atmosphere. I had
to think of Kapotte Muziek live now and then. Another nice record on a nice
format.(MR) 303 MBD - MP3 SINGLE (MP3 by Null Spenn Records)
MBD is a live collaboration of Michael Francis Duch, Lasse Marhaug
and Tore HonorÈ Be. The first track starts as a pretty classic
improv piece with regular instruments, but steadily electronics are
taking over, pushing aside percussion and piano. In the end one can
hear a cell phone ring, which seems to be a good end.....There seems
to be a new way for improvisation music, because more and more it
starts including electronics, which I think is a great development.
Track two proves this point: noises generated by the players blend
without any problem into each other and create a rich texture. (MR)

TORE HONORE BOE - BEAUTIFUL MOMENTS IN FOUR MINUTES (5" by Like A/An
Everflowing Stream)
Back in Vital Weekly 265 we reviewed a strange 10" release by Tore
Honore Boe, a record with no sleeve, not even an inner sleeve, and
with hardly any sound captured in the grooves. The whole idea was
that the postal system would scratch the copy before it would be
delivered and everybody has an unique copy. Of course, these things
call for a remix project. Now that is available, though not
officially released, as a double CDR on Boe's own label. Here the
remixes are either people working with 'just' the sounds delivered on
the vinyl or people who use this record in their DJ set. Included are
people I never heard of like Jan Bang, Scientifically Speaking with
Irene Moon, The Noisettes, Snail, Courage, LCA but also people like
Ronnie Sundin, Lasse Marhaug, Francisco Lopez, Freek Kinkelaar and
Kapotte Muziek are included here. Overall it's a release that is on
the noiser side of things, as one can imagine with the raw, static
crackles as their input. I must say I like those who (seem) to work
with just the given material and do not add their own thing. Those
who really go 'inside' as it is and discover the various
possibilities. As I understood this release is available, but it's
also open for anyone to release it, so grab y'r chance.
In the meantime, Tore also releases a 5" lathe cut record, with two
pieces for unprepared piano. On '2.02 (Opus For Naked Piano +
Traffic)' one may recognize the sounds of strings being rubbed and on
the '2.02 (Opus For Warm Piano + Ebow)' there are hints of an e-bow
playing the strings - but both tracks have some computer treatments,
which render the original beyond recognition. A strange little
record. (FdW) 389 JOHN HEGRE - COLORS DON'T CLASH (CD by Dekorder)
By far and wide known as one half of Jazzkammer, who are curiously now named Jazkamer, together with his long time pal Lasse Marhaug, but also responsible for a great CD with Maja Ratkje, 'Ballads' (see Vital Weekly 519), as well as other collaborative projects, but never solo - at least not release wise. On his debut release, Hegre plays guitar, like he used to do before turning all things laptop. It seems as if Hegre wants to convince us that he knows how to play the thing, since it starts out with a rather soft and sweet multi layered guitar piece of gentle guitar sounds. However Jazkamer fans shouldn't worry: noise is here too, just as in 'Worry', 'They' and 'Never' (the five pieces read as 'Don't Worry They Never Do' as a response to the title of the CD - all to be said by Snakefinger in an interview in 1987 just before he died), both of which die out in a very slow manner. Hegre's version of a blues piece closes the CD and that is the only piece in which there is an actual band playing, including bass, drums and Tore Boe and family on vocals. 'Worry' is for me the best piece, since it combines in a single tracks various approaches, but make throughout a great piece of music. Hegre shows us all the possibilities of the guitar as an instrument, or perhaps, his instrument, and as such he produced a pretty varied album, but we can wonder if it's perhaps not a bit too varied. One could wonder: what does Hegre want with this? A display of his no doubt great skills, but the coherency of the album is somewhat gone. But fans of Jazkamer, once again, will pleased with this. Wow what a package: on beautiful recycled paper, full colour printed
enveloppe with cards and booklet (all with an organic/geographic
reference). But what about the music inside? Sketch apperentely had
releases before on R&S/Apollo, which I didn't know because I'm not a
dedicated follower of that label and operate, to put things bluntly, in
ambient dance areas. The two CD's seem to fall apart in two distinct
styles. One is more the up-tempo rhythmic one and the other has tracks that
are more... organic. These flow around simple sound sources, but are, for
me at least, more deep and mysterious. The dancy CD was less interesting,
even though I hasten to admit well entertaining. Both these CD's do not
contain a new insight on either ambient or dance music - they seem to
operate where a lot of the ambienists left the development a few years
before the next hype came in. Oh well - entertainment is o.k. (FdW)
Address: 98 ORIGAMI ARTIKA - FAQUL (CD by Ohm Light)
To speak about the work of Origami is not easy for me: everytime I think I
have a clue what they are about, I think I miss out something. I guess they
are a collective of artists (musicians, painters, poets etc.) who work
internationally on a wide variety of art projects (if indeed they create
art..., or their intention is art: I do not know). Anyhow, I got send this
CD by one of the core members, who is responsible to putting together this
CD. It's a re-vitalized documentation of a tour held in 1994 (through
Slovakia, Slovenia, Italy, Czech Republic and Germany). The music produced
here (as I believe the Origami's make a wide variety of music) is best
described as 'mood' music. Dark sampled sounds and ditto dark synths.
Underneath there are electro-acoustic sounds but well-transformed (as in
'beyond recognition'). Were the female voice drops in, it tends to be a bit
too kitschy for me. But in general it is nicely put together, dark and
gloomy and well-documented. (FdW) 162 CATZENJAMMER (4xCDR compilation by Tib Prod)
There is no doubt about it: the world of CDR releases is a confusing one. Every week new bands, new labels, side-projects: if I wasn't this close to the fire, I am sure it would all be Chinese for me too. But the good thing is 'Catzenjammer' a 4CDR set by Tibprod (sometimes spelled as 'Cat-zen-jammer', 'Catz-en-jammer' and 'Catzen-jammer'), which is probably the most complete guide to bands that release CDRs, not just on Tibprod, but also all these other labels that flood the headquarters here. Four times seventy minutes per CD, makes a total of sixty-nine tracks. Phew. It contains a few people who have released real CDs, such as Lasse Marhaug, Kobi, Aidan Baker, Jan van den Dobbelsteen, Shifts and Tore Honore Boe. They are probably the heroes here. Otherwise it contains some of the most active players in this underground, names you see a lot, like Chefkirk, Guignol Dangereux, Sound OO, Taming Power, Tzesne, Sindre Bjerga, and it (re-) introduces us to Your Name Here, Subinterior, The Suncd Project, Makinoize, Skylined and Monotonos. The music ranges from the softest ambient, via musique concrete collage to harsh noise, all thrown together, but that is the biggest charm here: it's not the individual quality that matters, but the overall impression. A nearly complete guide to this year's underground... (FdW)
