When I finally had the nerve to take it out it appeared to be thisgrey 10" record without a sleeve. On one side there is a label withNorwegian stamps and my name and adress and a green 'B economique' sticker, covering the hole. On the other side it indicates the name and title. Nowthis is a very nice surprise of course. At the same time the means oftransportation indicate the subtitle of the record: postal system scratchdj version. It seems that Mr. B¿e has taken the meaning of the word scratchvery literally. Indeed the record is severly scratched by its unprotectedjourney here. Obviously this is part of the concept, so I put it on withouthesitation. After playing it twice I decided on the 33rpm version. It isdifficult to hear through the crackling vinyl at first, also because themusic starts fairly late. And when it starts its volume is very low. Thisplay between composed sound and random damaging is certainly interesting, although I feel that the music is actually too subtle at times. The samecan be said for the other side. I wouldn't mind hearing the music withoutthe scratches, because it is defenitely good enough. Then again, I wouldn'thave had such a nice surprise in my mailbox. Last but not least I have tomake a note here: the resemblance with Christian Marclay's Record Without ACover of 1985 is of course very obvious. But somehow I don't really mind.(MR), 265 TORE HONORé BE - SISTA' EP (7" by Mold)TORE HONORé BE - MELATONIN (Mini-CD by Mold)KA - 00 (7" by Mold)T. H. Be has made one of my favourite Cd's ever: Siesta. He is now back withthese two recordings. The 7" is a short edit of recordings made in New York, live and in the field and later edited. Environmental sounds mix withelectronics, silence mixes with noise and everything is very dynamic. I have toadmit that this was somewhat of a surprise after Siesta. Then again, Mr Be isa very versatile person and proves so instantly on side B, which is only veryfaint in the beginning and later goes full blast.Melatonin is an edit of various live recordings in Norway and the USA andstarts quite subtle with some background sounds, sometimes distorted byseemingly malfunctioning electronics. Field recordings are added to thespectrum, but everything is still very silent. And then track one is over, sadly. Track two also starts very silent with distant sounds and a soft rumbleand later a few tiny beeps and again it's over already, and again sadly. Trackthree continues with the beeps getting a little louder and shuffling sounds areadded. Then a rumble fades in and with that crackling noises and a feedbackhere and there. And again this track simply stops too soon I feel. So far myabsolute favourite disc.KA is one of Be's bands, and this 7" contains live recordings as well. Andonce more the volume is quite low in the beginning, later getting louder.Sounds of footsteps and other movements are on top of a layer of deep, stuttering bass. When volume increases, the layers interfere and create somedistortion. Field recordings are also used. The other side starts with a loopmade of bells or metal, to which live metal is added. Things get a littlerougher here and there, but in general it has the sam quiet atmosphere. I hadto think of Kapotte Muziek live now and then. Another nice record on a niceformat.(MR) 303 MBD - MP3 SINGLE (MP3 by Null Spenn Records)MBD is a live collaboration of Michael Francis Duch, Lasse Marhaug and Tore Honoré Be. The first track starts as a pretty classic improv piece with regular instruments, but steadily electronics are taking over, pushing aside percussion and piano. In the end one can hear a cell phone ring, which seems to be a good end.....There seems to be a new way for improvisation music, because more and more it starts including electronics, which I think is a great development. Track two proves this point: noises generated by the players blend without any problem into each other and create a rich texture. The whole idea wasthat the postal system would scratch the copy before it would bedelivered and everybody has an unique copy. Of course, these thingscall for a remix project. Now that is available, though notofficially released, as a double CDR on Boe's own label. Here theremixes are either people working with 'just' the sounds delivered onthe vinyl or people who use this record in their DJ set. Included arepeople I never heard of like Jan Bang, Scientifically Speaking withIrene Moon, The Noisettes, Snail, Courage, LCA but also people likeRonnie Sundin, Lasse Marhaug, Francisco Lopez, Freek Kinkelaar andKapotte Muziek are included here. Overall it's a release that is onthe noiser side of things, as one can imagine with the raw, staticcrackles as their input. I must say I like those who (seem) to workwith just the given material and do not add their own thing. Thosewho really go 'inside' as it is and discover the variouspossibilities. As I understood this release is available, but it'salso open for anyone to release it, so grab y'r chance. In the meantime, Tore also releases a 5" lathe cut record, with twopieces for unprepared piano. On '2.02 (Opus For Naked Piano +Traffic)' one may recognize the sounds of strings being rubbed and onthe '2.02 (Opus For Warm Piano + Ebow)' there are hints of an e-bowplaying the strings - but both tracks have some computer treatments, which render the original beyond recognition. A strange littlerecord. (FdW) 389 JOHN HEGRE - COLORS DON'T CLASH (CD by Dekorder)By far and wide known as one half of Jazzkammer, who are curiously now named Jazkamer, together with his long time pal Lasse Marhaug, but also responsible for a great CD with Maja Ratkje, 'Ballads' (see Vital Weekly 519), as well as other collaborative projects, but never solo - at least not release wise. On his debut release, Hegre plays guitar, like he used to do before turning all things laptop. It seems as if Hegre wants to convince us that he knows how to play the thing, since it starts out with a rather soft and sweet multi layered guitar piece of gentle guitar sounds. However Jazkamer fans shouldn't worry: noise is here too, just as in 'Worry', 'They' and 'Never' (the five pieces read as 'Don't Worry They Never Do' as a response to the title of the CD - all to be said by Snakefinger in an interview in 1987 just before he died), both of which die out in a very slow manner. Hegre's version of a blues piece closes the CD and that is the only piece in which there is an actual band playing, including bass, drums and Tore Boe and family on vocals. 'Worry' is for me the best piece, since it combines in a single tracks various approaches, but make throughout a great piece of music. Hegre shows us all the possibilities of the guitar as an instrument, or perhaps, his instrument, and as such he produced a pretty varied album, but we can wonder if it's perhaps not a bit too varied. One could wonder: what does Hegre want with this? A display of his no doubt great skills, but the coherency of the album is somewhat gone. But fans of Jazkamer, once again, will pleased with this. (FdW)Address: http://www.dekorder.com 551 SKETCH - ABEYANCE (2CD by Mold)Wow what a package: on beautiful recycled paper, full colour printedenveloppe with cards and booklet (all with an organic/geographicreference). But what about the music inside? Sketch apperentely hadreleases before on R&S/Apollo, which I didn't know because I'm not adedicated follower of that label and operate, to put things bluntly, inambient dance areas. The two CD's seem to fall apart in two distinctstyles. One is more the up- tempo rhythmic one and the other has tracks thatare more... organic. These flow around simple sound sources, but are, forme at least, more deep and mysterious. The dancy CD was less interesting, even though I hasten to admit well entertaining. Both these CD's do notcontain a new insight on either ambient or dance music - they seem tooperate where a lot of the ambienists left the development a few yearsbefore the next hype came in. Oh well - entertainment is o.k. (FdW)Address: 98 ORIGAMI ARTIKA - FAQUL (CD by Ohm Light)To speak about the work of Origami is not easy for me: everytime I think Ihave a clue what they are about, I think I miss out something. I guess theyare a collective of artists (musicians, painters, poets etc.) who workinternationally on a wide variety of art projects (if indeed they createart..., or their intention is art: I do not know). Anyhow, I got send thisCD by one of the core members, who is responsible to putting together thisCD. It's a re- vitalized documentation of a tour held in 1994 (throughSlovakia, Slovenia, Italy, Czech Republic and Germany). The music producedhere (as I believe the Origami's make a wide variety of music) is bestdescribed as 'mood' music. Dark sampled sounds and ditto dark synths.Underneath there are electro-acoustic sounds but well-transformed (as in'beyond recognition'). Were the female voice drops in, it tends to be a bittoo kitschy for me. But in general it is nicely put together, dark andgloomy and well-documented. (FdW) 162 CATZENJAMMER (4xCDR compilation by Tib Prod)There is no doubt about it: the world of CDR releases is a confusing one. Every week new bands, new labels, side- projects: if I wasn't this close to the fire, I am sure it would all be Chinese for me too. But the good thing is 'Catzenjammer' a 4CDR set by Tibprod (sometimes spelled as 'Cat-zen-jammer', 'Catz-en-jammer' and 'Catzen-jammer'), which is probably the most complete guide to bands that release CDRs, not just on Tibprod, but also all these other labels that flood the headquarters here. Four times seventy minutes per CD, makes a total of sixty-nine tracks. Phew. It contains a few people who have released real CDs, such as Lasse Marhaug, Kobi, Aidan Baker, Jan van den Dobbelsteen, Shifts and Tore Honore Boe. They are probably the heroes here. Otherwise it contains some of the most active players in this underground, names you see a lot, like Chefkirk, Guignol Dangereux, Sound OO, Taming Power, Tzesne, Sindre Bjerga, and it (re-) introduces us to Your Name Here, Subinterior, The Suncd Project, Makinoize, Skylined and Monotonos. The music ranges from the softest ambient, via musique concrete collage to harsh noise, all thrown together, but that is the biggest charm here: it's not the individual quality that matters, but the overall impression. A nearly complete guide to this year's underground... (FdW)Address: http://www.tibprod.com 496 galaktika Here at Silber, mothers have always had a special place in our heart. So weÕre happy to finally get a compilation together to pay a little bit of the tribute mothers are so dearly due. Everyone has a different style of song to show their love from heavy metal (Wrong Brothers) to post-rock (Glissade, Electric Bird Noise) to noise (Moral Crayfish) to simply acoustic guitar (Remora). While most went the instrumental route, the songs with vocals by Plumerai & Miss Massive Snowflake show the tongue-in-cheek comedy that we all use to tell our moms we love them. So maybe you should stop reading this & call your mom & tell her you appreciate her.Date: 2007-04-30 http://www.archive.org/details/silber060-silber-hearts-mom http://www.silbermedia.com/qrd/archives/33about.html The theme is Òrock & rollÓ dads; though I guess it is a little bit of a stretch to call most of the music covered rock & roll.Ê The inspiration for it has come from a lot of things.Ê IÕve been reading a few interview books like Songwriters on Songwriting & Studs TerkelÕs Working & wanted to try something where I dive in a little deeper into a subject when doing interviews.Ê Several of my friends lately seem to be making the commitment either to have kids or have a surgery to make the commitment to not have kids (which would be another issue altogether).Ê & of course thereÕs my personal interest/fear of children of my own since I am starting to turn into one of the ÒadultsÓ instead of one of the ÒkidsÓ in pretty much any setting I find myself in.Ê Now after all the hours of work on the interviews, IÕm still not sure I understand what I personally should do any better.Ê But I think when Rune Flaten kinda explains everything with, ÒIt is not like you are necessarily made a better person if you have children.Ê Everyone doesnÕt have to become a parent, it is very okay not to.ÓÊ Anyway, I hope you dig this issue. IÕm thinking about making a print version available for people to give as gifts to expectant fathers.Ê Thanks for all your time & support as always. Hrt Brian John Mitchell When I first met Rune, it struck me that he didnÕt quite fit the Origami Republika mold.Ê Respectible, responsible, well groomed, holds a steady jobÉ but then I saw a live performance where his instrument was a microphone in a wooden box & he controlled feedback by opening & closing the lid.Ê So there you goÉ. QRD Ð How old were you when you first realized you wanted to be a professional musician? Rune Ð It was an accident.Ê I just had some time on my hands & a band to go on tour with.Ê But when I had experienced playing live for an audience, there was no way back. QRD Ð What are a few highlights of your musical career? Rune Ð Oh.Ê Mostly that would involve playing with other bands or people, like the Naro Giraffe Group at Riddu Riddu festival.Ê Or with Tanya Tagaq, or the amazing Jen Paches.Ê Yes.Ê & Lee Pui Ming.Ê Interaction with unknown (or known) people is good.Ê Ah! & thereÕs the infamous Òrar musikk festivalÓ in the woods here in Norway.Ê We were for some mysterious reason scheduled as Òorigami fururamaÓ some years ago, & played the part.Ê Ha!Ê Vancouver Breakfast TV after a long night of anything but sleep.Ê Trust me, kids; it is great to play in a band. QRD Ð At what age did you decide you wanted to become a father? Rune Ð Once again, I didnÕt as much decide that I wanted to become a father.Ê It was more like deciding not-to-not want kids.Ê All my kids are happy & wonderful accidents. QRD Ð What are some positive & negative impacts your family has had on your career? Rune Ð The obvious positive thing is that having a family alters your views on most things in life.Ê You have to put your own needs in the back seat, & try to see the bigger picture of whatÕs important for everyone.Ê I think that has affected my view on how to make music as well.Ê Another thing, with small kids there is not much time left for doing other extra-familiar activities, like playing music.Ê So the time available for playing music is very valuable. QRD Ð What are some positive & negative impacts your career has had on your family? Rune Ð Well, they are not very happy when I leave them to go out drinking & playing.Ê &Ê itÕs not like they are great fans of my music either.Ê But the kids love to play around with my instruments & stuff. QRD Ð Have your children effected the music you make &/or listen to? Rune Ð I think it has affected my music, but it is difficult to tell in what direction.Ê I certainly know & have recorded more lullabies since I started singing them regularly at home.Ê & I cannot listen to all the wonderful noise I like whenever I like.Ê So the music I listen to has changed a lot.Ê But that is also for the good, as I have explored other directions, learning about folk music from around the globe. QRD Ð Have you had problems with the lack of steady money from a musical career providing the security you feel necessary in your household? Rune Ð IÕve never had much money.Ê Not a problem.Ê Keep your expenses low. QRD Ð Given the limitations having a family has on being a touring musician, would you have toured more earlier in life if youÕd known? Rune Ð Certainly.Ê But the time is approaching when touring is easier again, as the kids get older & more independent.Ê It is a period of five to ten years, when touring is difficult.Ê After that it gets easier. QRD Ð Do you think being a father or a musician has a greater impact on your community? Rune Ð What is my community? I think I live several lives, in different communities.Ê & in some my role as a father has greater impact than in others, where people know me as a musician. QRD Ð Would you rather see your child eventually become a musician or parent? Rune Ð Both, preferably.Ê But I donÕt think people/my kids have to have children of their own.Ê It is not like you are necessarily made a better person if you have children.Ê Everyone doesnÕt have to become a parent, it is very okay not to. QRD Ð Both family & music seem like things that will take up as much of your time as youÕre willing to put in.Ê How do you end up dividing your time? Rune Ð Family is more important than music.ÉÊ Whatever spare time is available goes to the music.Ê But then again, the spare time available increases when the kids get older. QRD Ð What do your children think of your music? Rune Ð They think it is strange, but some of it they like.Ê I mostly sing traditional folk tunes, & the kids know most of them as I sing these around the house most days. QRD Ð Do you think you could ever do a musical project with your children? Rune Ð Naturally!Ê I have recordings of them, & as they are getting older, I want to do things together with them.Ê Hell, IÕve got three boys.Ê ThatÕs drums, bass, & guitar right there. QRD Ð Any words of advice to young people? Rune Ð No.Ê Go figure it out yourselves.Ê ItÕs not like youÕd listen to me, anyways.
